Novel Study-"The Phantom Tollbooth"

phantom tollbooth.jpg

This language arts novel study unit was framed with the following KSAs in mind: KSA #5, KSA #6, and KSA #11.

Myself and the students thoroughly enjoyed the novel study unit. Students were actively engaged with the material and demonstrated their ability to summarize and comprehend content in a variety of ways. For example, students were required to complete three summative assignments throughout the course of this unit, which were as follows: a summary chart, a comic strip, and a brochure, in attempts to reflect KSA #11, which highlights the purpose of student assessment. There was a great deal of "...short, medium, and long range planning." (KSA #6) that went into this unit, which was evidenced in both lesson plans and rubrics constructed for this unit. The range of assignments in this language arts unit were meant to appeal to a variety of learners and hit KSA #5 by emphasizing that "every student can learn, albeit at different rates and in different ways."

Below are some excellent examples of student comic strips for our Language Arts novel study unit.

I have chosen to feature this summative task in my portfolio because this comic strip assignment was designed so that students of varying skill level and academic strength could excel, and both my teacher associate and myself were very pleased with the products of learning that the students produced.
